What a great record the tough and talented Sagarra is compiling, at Sandown on Wednesday the 5Y0 recording the fifth success of his 20 start career, one which as also seen him in the placings on six occasions – amassing over $1540,000 in stakes.
On the back of a close up fifth at Caulfield at his previous outing, the bay was sent out favourite in the 1000m BM78 contest and a strong ride by Lewis German saw him on pace early – sitting wide but in the best going in demanding conditions.
Losing a bit of ground going wide turning, Sagarra took a few strides to really warm up but once he did he was so game wearing down the leader (the very handy Our Gladiator) and getting clear late to win by a length with plenty in hand.
“It was a terrific win,” Robbie enthused, adding that “he can be a hard horse to manage but he is consistent and he tries hard so it was great to see him past the post first.”
“I would like to thank Griffiths Racing and the owners for the opportunity,” Lewis German said.
“The horse was in perfect order and I was confident going into the race as he ran a great race last start.”
Bred by great stable clients Princeton Thoroughbred Stud, Sagarra is a son of Teofilo and the unraced Exceed And Excel mare Mintbin whose dam is the stakes placed Sophistocat from the family of Oakleigh Plate winner Swiss Ace.
