Maitresse's Mornington Maiden

Great to see the talented Maitresse break through for an impressive maiden victory at Mornington on Friday.

A mare who has always displayed good ability, the four-year-old appreciated a rise in distance third up from a break and she pretty much won as she liked - having three lengths on her rivals at the line.

Settling well off a hot pace, the bay cruised up to the leaders before the turn – shooting away straightening.

A consistent daughter of Commands, Maitresse has rarely been far away in ten outings and, having learned how to better settle in her races, she looks ready to right on with it.

Bred by Errol Campbell and raced by him with Christopher Gannell, Julian & Donna Grech and Paul & Diana Vawdrey, Maitresse is out of the city winning Masterclass mare Miss Aryan. That mare, also dam of the winners Big Brother and Addiction, is a half sister to the popular dual Gr.1 winning miler Wong (George Ryder Stakes, Chipping Norton Stakes).

Donna Grech was one very happy owner on course to celebrate the victory.

"Her dam is owned by a close friend in Andrew Gannell and he bred her in partnership with Errol Campbell. I was always keen on her and when she was two he offered us a share."

"She has been knocking on the door for a while and when she was stepped up in distance the promise she had been showing came to the fore."

"Earler this preparation she was a tad too keen," she continued, "but Robbie removed her blinkers and took her back to basics and it has been paying off."

"Well done Robbie - patience is a virtue and something lacking in a lot of trainers. It was good to be there and see her win!"
