Special Win for Beau
Apr 27, 2016
It was a significant victory recorded by Aurum Spirit at Sandown on Wednesday, the consistent seven-year-old providing apprentice Beau Mertens with his very first metropolitan winner.
And how apt he do it for us, with Robbie enjoying such a good association with Beau's dad Peter... and he was the first on the phone not long after Aurum Spirit hit the line.
"He rode a lot of winners for the stable and was fantastic for us for many years," Robbie said, adding that "I just said to him now we have a new and improved model!"
"This is great for Beau," he continued - "he is a great young fellow and Aurum Spirit is a horse who needs a good ride and he gave him one."
Beau, who described his first city win as "a big thrill," said that he had watched replays of Aurum Spirit's previous runs, noting that he is at his best when not bottled up for runs.
"I knew that he can show a good turn of foot once he is into clear running," he said.
"So I was happy just to wait and wait today and once we got into the clear he pinned his ears back and was strong to the line."
A seven times winner of over $266,000 in stakes, Aurum Spirit has been a terrific horse for connections winning at Sandown, Pakenham, Sale, Geelong and Bendigo.
Bred by the Tobin family out of their city winning mare Lakemba Gold, Aurum Spirit is a son of one of our favourite stallions Bel Esprit.
