Greg Miles stands down for Zarpoya

Nov 14, 2016

Popular race caller Greg Miles does not take too many races off but he put down the binocular for the opening event at Sandown on Saturday, happy to watch the Merson Cooper Stakes from the owners stand.

Along with his fellow owners of exciting filly Zarpoya who was such a gallant third at her debut, beaten less than two lengths at juicy double figure odds.

"I could not have called that properly," Miles joked with racing.com's Shane Anderson - "I don't know how Bryan Martin did it when he had Fields Of Omagh!"

"I called a race a horse I had a share in at Moonee Valley about 20 years ago and I don't think I did a very good job of it so to take one race off for the spring - I am sure it was the right decision!"

"Delighted" with Zarpoya's effort to secure black type at debut, Miles was excited by the run - "she missed the start, did a few things wrong but showed a bit of dash and a bit of endeavour."

A $46,000 Magic Millions graduate selected by Robbie with Peter Ford, Zarpoya is a daughter of Sepoy and the imported Rock Of Gibraltar mare Zarzuela - half-sister to the Mackinnon Stakes winner Glass Harmonium.

Onwards and upwards for this girl!
