A Choice Performer
Aug 03, 2017
With Cherief's Choice showing enough last time in to earn a crack at a Blue Diamond Preview at debut (in which she was a fast-finishing third after racing wide) it was only a matter of time until she broke her maiden.
Which she did in easy style at Pakenham on Friday, jumping to the lead and controlling the race from barrier one - giving a great kick into the straight and maintaining a gap over her rivals with an impressive winning margin of 1 1/2 lengths.
"She has always shown us that she has a ton of ability," enthused a happy Jade Matthews, "and she has come back nice and strong from her spell."
Describing Cherief's Choice as "a ready-made racehorse who does everything right," Matthews said that the stable is confident that she will measure up to black type over the next couple of months - "there are high hopes for her so we will take on those sort of races."
The progeny of champion stallion Redoute's Choice are known for their laid-back nature and Cherief's Choice is a perfect example - "she is just so relaxed," Matthews said, "she doesn't have a worry in the world."
There was good support for Cherief's Choice and the stable were sure of a bold showing - "she ran a great time in a trial the other week so we were confident that she was switched on and ready to go."
Jockey Jye Mc Neill, who has been aboard Cherief's Choice at all three of her runs to date, was taken with the level of maturity shown by the three-year-old - "she has really improved off last campaign," he said.
Whilst noting that the bay was ridden more quietly at her first couple of starts, McNeil was keen to make the most of the inside draw.
"We used the barrier to our advantage and she was too good," he said, adding that "she handled herself really well out in front."
Raced big a group of great stable clients, Cherief's Choice is out of the now sadly deceased French Deputy mare Cherief, full sister to the Gr.3 winner Revolte and half-sister to the Group One mare Alverta and Gr.3 galloper Aerobatics.
This is a strong US family with her fourth dam being the five times Group One winner It's In The Air, ancestress of big race winners Storming Home, Glencadam Gold, Music Note and Musical Chimes.
