Weekend Escape Cruises At Debut

Aug 03, 2017

What heart and determination was displayed by our debutant Weekend Escape at Pakenham on Thursday - the promising mare the only horse tough enough to chase down short priced favourite Bonney as that mare skipped lengths clear into the straight.

It was no mean task for Weekend Escape with she and the runner-up dominating the race to the extent that she had no other horses around her, as Jade Matthews noted, "nothing to chase."

"You expect first starters to do a bit wrong, especially when left by themselves but she was so very professionally and she really toughed it out."

"She has done a super job, hopefully onwards and upwards!"

The victory came as no surprise to the stable with Weekend Escape "doing everything so well at home and in her trials."

Jockey Ryan Maloney was happy throughout the race - "she flew the gates but I was happy for her to take the trail and wait and I was always confident that she was going to reel the other horse in... and she did it quite comfortably at the end."

"I have had a little bit to do with her at home and she has always shown a bit, she's quite speed and she has got a really nice action."

Weekend Escape's winning margin was half a length with a further six lengths to the third horse.

By Exceed And Excel's triple Group One winning son Helmet, Weekend Escape is the seventh winner (from as many foals to race) for the unraced Spartacus mare Induct.

Paying a return visit to Helmet last spring, Induct is also dam of the Gr.3 winning sprinter Broken and the stakes placed Sunday Escape from the family of big race winners Keeper, Castledale and Metal Bender.
