Northkape Flies At Ballarat
Oct 26, 2017
It is a great relationship that jockey Nathan Punch has with the speedy Northkape; the pair combining for three victories with the latest of those coming at Ballarat on Thursday.
Jumping fast, Northkape looked a chance to lead early but with Dothraki Princess kicking up on the inside she was happy to sit off her, always travelling well.
Hitting the lead at the 300m, Northkape was quickly clear of her rivals - strong to the line saluting by a soft 1 3/4 lengths.
"The key to her is for her to be in a controlling position," Punch said, "and I was always very confident with the way she was travelling."
"I kept her on the bridle for as long as I could and when I asked her to quicken she was really good."
"She has always been a nice horse," said the stable's Beth Schroen, adding that "we were really confident leading into this race."
Backing up from a close up fifth at Mornington just four days prior, Northkape had pulled up extremely well.
"She came through the run in fantastic order, jumping out of her skin in fact."
Raced by a large and happy group of owners the daughter of Kaphero was bred by Adam Sangster and Limerick Lane out of the well related Stravinsky mare Northeast Sheila.
Served last spring by Smart Missile having produced a Toronado filly last spring, Northeast Sheila is a half-sister to the VRC St Leger winner Berlioz from the prolific Eight Carat family.
Northkape's fourth dam is Cotehele House, dam of the high class race horses and stallions Commands and Danewin.
