MR MONEY BAGS VICTORY

Dec 20, 2017

The support came for Mr Money Bags at Sandown on Wednesday and the punters were spot on with the promising three-year-old recording an impressive victory at just his third start.

Caught wide when fourth at his previous start and strong to the line at his Moe debut, the son of Written Tycoon had blinkers added to his gear and it made the difference with the eye-catching chestnut travelling well on pace.

Nicely rated by Beau Mertens who had the gelding sitting up outside the leader from the early stages, Mr Money Bags took over at the 300m and was full of running saluting by 1 3/4 lengths.

A horse who has always shown good ability, Mr Money Bags has however been somewhat of a project horse - things not really coming naturally to him!

"On the training track he is either anxious or lazy," Robbie laughed, adding that "he is a big raw horse who just doesn't know what he is doing yet."

"Though he finished well at his first two starts he was a bit blase, he did it all in slow motion and too late. So we put the blinkers on to sharpen him right up and it was good to see him go more forward today."

"And I like the way he was nice and strong at the end. I think he will stretch even further in distance but we will take him one step at a time and see where he ends up."

"The Written Tycoons we've had have improved with age and I think this guy fits that criteria."

Riding Mr Money Bags for the first time, Mertens was impressed.

"I was concerned that he might over-race in the blinkers but to his credit he really switched off."

"He is still very green however, there is a lot of improvement to come."

A bargain $25,000 Adelaide Magic Millions purchase for Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock, Mr Money Bags is the first runner for the city winning Dubai Destination mare Biggietupac who sadly died young only recently, leaving behind a Love Conquers All colt.

She was a half-sister to the durable stakes winner Tramuntana out of the stakes placed Success Express mare Hip Hop from the family of stakes winners Video Star, Ishiabeel, Handsome Seattle and La Belle Russe.
