Tricky Draw No Obstacle for Cappanello
Oct 04, 2018
Rarely is it ideal to draw the outside gate which is probably why, despite his consistent form, Cappanello was sent out at such generous odds at Ballarat on Wednesday.
30-1 was on offer much to the delight of his supporters who had noted his game Morphettville third at his previous start, once which was preceded by a gutsy victory at Echuca.
Whilst Cappanello had to do a little early work from the gate, the lead was soon his - Ben Thompson doing a great job having the five-year-old into a smooth rhythm along the rails.
Giving a nice kick at the 300m, Cappanello had to fend off several late challengers but he was determined to the line - recording his fourth victory from 18 starts.
"He has had a great preparation," Thompson said - "his owners are having a lot of fun with him."
"The last 100m seemed a long way to the post but I was able to use his fitness and he did a good job."
"He has been in really good form," the stable's Reid Balfour said.
"We thought he'd run well though the gate did look awkward - he did well to overcome that."
