There is not much more exciting for connections of a horse to watch him charge home from the rear of the field and that is just what Charlton did at Ballarat on Friday - getting a fair way back in a strongly run race, peeling widest into the straight and really flying!
Swamping his rivals before drawing clear late to win by an impressive half length, Charlton was well fancied by the stable having run such a good race at his previous start when resuming at Pakenham.
"And when they went quite hard I was all the more confident," said Beth Schoen,
"He ran a fantastic race last start and being the sort of horse who settles back it was fantastic for him to have that nice long straight so that he could come home over the top of them."
The strong pace in the race really suited Charlton with jockey Luke Currie noting that he was always pretty happy in running despite a less than ideal getaway.
"He fell out of the machine and ended up a bit further back than I'd planned but I was happy with the tempo - it was perfect for us."
"I knew the leaders would come back to us."
Whilst Charlton has had a bit of racing - this win his third from 18 starts - he is still learning his craft... "he wanted to duck around a bit late, he did a bit wrong but he was out wide on his own."
A well related son of three times Champion Sire Redoute's Choice purchased at the 2015 Magic Millions, Charlton is part owned by his breeder Gerry Harvey. A 3/4 brother to the dual Group winner Sambro, he is out of the stakes placed multiple city winning Encosta de Lago mare Eau de Joie who sadly died a couple of years ago.
Charlton can boast amongst his relations the likes of feature race winners Polar Success (his dam's Golden Slipper winning half-sister), Circles Of Gold, Bit Of A Skite, Haradasun, Elvstroem, Starspangledbanner and Highland Reel.
