Divine Intervention!

How best to get over the disappointment of missing out on a VRC Derby berth with Alessandro?

Win another feature race on the programme!

Whilst Craig & Kathy Pearce's promising stayer Alessandro was at home on Saturday their talented mare Divine Quality was at Flemington kicking off her preparation in the final event of the day, the Gr.3 Begonia Belle Stakes.

A mare who has always raced well fresh, Divine Quality was however double figure odds in the $200,000 1100m contest - though she travelled and won like an odds-on favourite!

Suited by a strong tempo, Divine Quality was happy to take her place at the rear of the field with Beau Mertens biding his time and making the most of the cover afforded to him.

From the 300m Beau had the attractive chestnut off heels and into clear running and it was a very exciting final furlong with Divine Quality stride by fast stride gathering in her rivals - from the 100m drawing clear to salute by a most impressive 3 1/4 lengths.

"To win a race on any day is great," Robbie enthused, "but to win one on Derby Day is outstanding!"

"Especially," he continued, "when it is for such great people as Craig and Kathy who have supported me so much in my training."

"She was brilliant today, she has always been a good mare and she is very good fresh... we targetted this race a long time ago and we were delighted when she drew 17 as it complemented her racing style."

"Beau rode her beautifully, I loved the way she joined in early - she was travelling so well."

Robbie had been confident in the lead up to the race, noting that "Nathan Rose has been riding her at home and has been so happy with her, she has had a beautiful preparation and the proof is in the pudding today."

"What a thrill it is to ride a winner on Derby Day," Beau said - "it is a really amazing feeling."

"Thank you to Robbie and the owners keeping me on, this horse and I have a really good connection."

They sure do - Beau riding Divine Quality on seven occasions for two wins and five seconds!

Bred in Victoria by Uluru Stud, the daughter of Golden Slipper winner Sepoy caught our eye at the 2015 Magic Millions where she was secured for $185,000.

A half-sister to the six times winner One Faster, Divine Quality is the second foal produced by the winning Fastnet Rock mare Nun Faster.

Recently foaling a Written Tycoon filly, Nun Faster is a half-sister to the Listed winning sprinter Vatican whilst her dam Our Sistine by Peintre Celebre is a half-sister to the triple Group One winner King's Chapel.
