Charlton Rewards Best Bud

Dec 30, 2018

It was great to see Matthew "Max" Allen back in winning form first up off his long spell on Halvorsen on Friday and better still to see him make it two from two when his old friend Charlton saluted at Seymour on Sunday.

"He spends every morning on him, they are best buds," said the stable's Beth Schroen, noting that it was the third time that Allen and Charlton have combined for race track success.

Not having had the best of luck at previous outings - wide at Bairnsdale in mid-December and slowly away at Sandown earlier in the month - Charlton was ridden more positively this time and certainly responded.

"He has been getting back and running on so today I got him up there," Allen said, adding that he then "waited for something to come up beneath him to keep him interested."

Part of a line of four turning, Charlton showed plenty of heart fighting his way to the line - Allen doing a fair bit of work second up!

"I am blowing my head off," he laughed, "I needed the run!"

A horse who has "always shown talent," according to Schroen, Charlton can "hopefully put a few together now that we have him up to his ideal distance."

The winner of four of his 23 starts with a further eight placings on his resume, Charlton (a 3/4 brother to the dual Group winner Sambro) is a son of the champion stallion Redoute's Choice from the family of the wonderful gallopers Elvstroem, Haradasun, Circles Of Gold, Highland Reel and Starspangledbanner.
