A busy day at Pakenham began in winning style with Unruly Student breaking his maiden in impressive fashion.
A horse who has always shown ability, Unruly Student had been in the placings at three of his first five starts and it was good to see him hit the line so well.
"He made pretty easy work of it," said Jade Matthews, adding that the son of Churchill Downs had been a little bit on the unruly side when he was younger.
"But he has matured a lot," she said, adding that there was an air of confidence about the horse who had progressed well since his third at Mornington a couple of weeks ago.
"He had come on nicely."
Still a bit green - wanting to pull at different stages of the race - Unruly Student gave Matthews some cause for concern.
"I was worried that he was going to bring himself unstuck but he was very strong over the final stages."
Jockey Craig Newitt, who was riding the bay for the first time, was impressed.
"He is a nice little horse. He bounced out of the gates and put himself into the right spot."
"He doesn't quite know how to get onto the bridle yet but he was just too good."
Raced by June Kerr, Stan Kerr, Terry Mahoney, Jenny Mahoney and Alex Astbury, Unruly Student was bred by Peter Ford out of the metropolitan winning Royal Academy mare Academic Miss.
She has done a great job at stud, all four of her runners being winners including stable favourite Dash For Viz (pictured) - our three times stakes placed multiple city winner.
