Down The Hatch shines first up
Apr 25, 2015
A filly who has always shown above average ability, Down The Hatch proved a class above her rivals when resuming at Cranbourne on Friday night.
Jumping fast before taking a sit behind the leader, Down The Hatch travelled well throughout and, after getting clear early in the straight was soon in front - and away she went, saluting by a length with plenty in hand.
Down The Hatch, who has won three of her five starts, was badly galloped on when contesting the Gr.3 Quezette Stakes last August and she was so game finding winning form at her first start since then.
"She has done a great job to overcome that injury," said Reid Balfour.
Jockey Nathan Punch agreed - "we wanted an easy kill for her to regain her confidence and it was a soft win."
"She was always going to prove better than those horses," he said, adding that he was confident throughout - "she travelled so nicely behind the leader and once she got out she was just too strong."
A home-bred for terrific stable client Kevin Wacey, Down The Hatch is a daughter of Flying Spur and the speedy Gr.2 winning Rory's Jester mare Toast Of The Coast.
We loved that mare's yearling so much this year that we purchased him for $180,000 at this year's Melbourne Premier - pictured is that stunning colt by Foxwedge.
