Solar Salutes... Again!

Mar 21, 2016

What great form Solar Duchess is in, the talented and consistent mare charging home to nab victory in the last stride at Moonee Valley on Friday night - in doing so recording her fifth win for this campaign.

Successful at her last two at Moonee Valley, Solar Duchess added a string to her bow with this latest win, her first on a rain affected track.

"We didn't know if she'd handle it or not," Don Healy admitted, noting that an owner told him before the race that only a small percentage of the Duke Of Marmalade breed have won on wet tracks.

But handle it she did, winning her seventh race and increasing her prize money tally to $123, 660.

It was the fifth time Solar Duchess has combined with Andrew Mallyon for a win and she is one of his favourites.

"She can be a bit of a cantankerous sort of mare," he said, "but when she is ridden quietly she can reel off some good sectionals late."

"She has a ton of ability but she can still do a bit wrong. Hopefully she improves manners wise and she can go up further in grade."
