A Favourite Winner
Feb 20, 2015
Stable apprentice Nathan Punch has a soft spot for Deeming, a horse he considers his favourite - and so it was a special thrill for him to partner that six-year-old to victory at Ballarat on Thursday.
Riding a lovely race on the Nadeem mare who had not managed a win in over two years (not always having the best of luck), Punch had him travelling nicely behind the pace.
Looking for runs in the straight, Deeming really started to make ground at the 100m and - after going up on the inside of the leader put her nose out right on the line to claim an exciting victory.
"I am absolutely thrilled," Punch enthused - "I don't think I have been this happy in my life!"
Before beginning his riding career just recently (Deeming his second winner), Punch had been the mare's regular strapper and track rider.
"I've had a lot to do with her, I have ridden her just about every day for the last three years and I'd like to thank Robbie and the owners for supporting me and giving me the ride."
