ZADON! FIGHTER!

Feb 12, 2015

"ZADON! FIGHTER!" declared race caller Greg Miles as our talented four-year-old crossed the line in the BM70 event at Mornington on Wednesday.

Challenged several times in the straight Zadon, who had hit the lead turning, just kept finding and finding - the two after him looking likely to catch him on several occasions.

But he would just not give in, putting his nose out right where it counted to record the third win of his consistent eight start career.

Ben Melham has been aboard for all three wins and Robbie is understandably very happy with the pair - "I am delighted in both horse and rider," he enthused - "they are going great guns together!"

Robbie was impressed with the toughness Zadon showed over the final stages - "he had a real fight in the straight and he had to dig deep."

Having recorded his other two victories at Bendigo and Ballarat, Zadon added another dimension to his talent winning at Mornington.

"It tells us that he is versatile," Robbie explained - "it was the first time we have taken him to a smaller circuit."

"And I actually think that he is better ridden slightly off them - but he is a work in progress and we might experiment with that when we get him back to the larger tracks."

Adding that it "will be nice to get him out over even further," Robbie described Zadon as "a progressive horse who has the pedigree to take him all the way."

Ben Melham has been impressed with Zadon all the way and is confident that there is scope for improvement from the lightly raced gelding.

"He has got really good ability but at this stage he just has a think about things. He gets to the lead and pricks his ears and thinks job done - but kudos to him, he digs deep."

Ben agreed that Zadon will be all the stronger to the line ridden differently at bigger tracks - "he as a big action to him and he is probably suited on a larger, longer track. And ride him quietly, let him come late."

Congratulations to Zadon's happy owners Bill Caplice, Anita Caplice, Elizabeth Caplice, Julianne Caplice, Charles Macek, Graeme McGregor, Joy McGregor, Brian Beattie, Paul Thomas, Adam Warren, Bearman Racing, Village People and Maria Van Wegen.
